Product Description
Leakage current problems in electrical installations are not always present at the moment of inspection. RCD or GFCI trips can occur only under certain operating conditions, at specific times, or when multiple loads switch simultaneously, making the cause difficult to identify with a handheld clamp meter during a short measurement.
The HIOKI CM4003 AC leakage clamp meter is designed for these situations. It provides the same high sensitivity leakage current measurement as the CM4002, covering AC currents from 60 μA to 200 A, and adds RMS and waveform output for connection to a recorder. This allows very small leakage currents, cumulative leakage, and load current changes to be monitored and documented over time when the cause of a trip cannot be captured during a spot check.

Leakage current, differential current and load current
The CM4003 provides six measurement ranges from 6 mA to 200 A AC and measures leakage currents down to 60 μA, covering leakage current, differential current, and load current measurement in a single clamp meter. With a maximum conductor diameter of 40 mm, the clamp accommodates larger conductors and multi-core cables in distribution systems where currents from multiple circuits need to be measured over time.
The instrument covers a frequency range from 15 Hz to 2 kHz, including higher-frequency leakage currents such as those generated by inverters and switching power supplies. A selectable 50/60 Hz filter suppresses these components and isolates the leakage current relevant to RCD tripping. A threshold alarm indicates when a defined leakage current level is exceeded by means of a buzzer and red warning backlight and provides a pass or fail indication relative to a user-defined limit. Current and frequency can be viewed simultaneously on the display, which is backlit for measurements in low-light environments. Additional functions include Auto Hold, Max/Min/Avg recording, inrush current measurement, and peak value recording for capturing transient current peaks.

Output and external power supply for long term monitoring
Unlike the CM4002, the CM4003 provides switchable RMS and waveform output for connection to a recorder or other data acquisition system. The supplied 1.5 m L9097 Connection Cable connects the instrument to the external device and provides a BNC male output for direct connection to recorder inputs. The same cable also includes a USB C power input for external supply of the CM4003 during long term measurements, and a 1.0 m L9510 USB A to USB C cable is included for power connection.
The output can be switched between RMS value and waveform output. The RMS output is refreshed five times per second and is suitable for recording measured current values over time with a logger, recorder, or other data acquisition system with a voltage input. The waveform output is intended for recorder based monitoring of current waveforms, for example with a memory recorder such as the MR8870 or MR8880.
For stationary monitoring, the optional Z1013 AC Adapter can be used as a USB power source. For data acquisition systems with 4 mm inputs, the optional 9704 Conversion Adapter provides a BNC female to banana plug interface. This output and external power supply design extends the CM4003 from a leakage clamp meter for spot checks to a measurement system for long term recording of leakage current, differential current, and load current. As a result of this design, the CM4003 is rated CAT III 300 V.
Bluetooth communication
Bluetooth communication can be added to the CM4003 with the optional Z3210 Bluetooth Adapter. Measurement values can be transferred to a smartphone or tablet for documentation, annotation, and report generation. Live display on a mobile device is also possible when the instrument is mounted in a position where the screen cannot be viewed directly.
The Z3210 also enables HID operation. In this mode, measured values are sent directly to Excel or other applications as keyboard input, allowing straightforward transfer to the active field on the connected device.
Designed and manufactured in Japan
For decades, HIOKI has developed current measurement technology for demanding applications in electrical systems. Its clamp meters and clamp multimeters are designed and built at the company’s own production site in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. The close connection between development and manufacturing, together with control over sensor technology, mechanics, and electronics, becomes evident in daily use.
