Product Description
The IR5051-90 is a set consisting of the IR5051 High Voltage Insulation Tester and the included Z3210 Bluetooth adapter. Based on the IR5051, it combines a dedicated PV function for insulation resistance testing on photovoltaic systems during power generation with standard high voltage insulation measurement from 250 V to 5 kV and 10 MΩ to 10 TΩ. The included Z3210 adds wireless data transfer for documentation oriented workflows in the field.
Separate PV measurement section for testing during power generation
A key feature of the IR5051-90 is its physically separate PV measurement section. It is selected in its own area on the rotary switch and is designed specifically for insulation resistance measurements on PV systems up to 2000 V with ranges up to 100 GΩ. There is no need to wait until nightfall or interrupt power generation. The IR5051-90 performs insulation resistance measurements on PV systems during the day and while the system is generating power. Each measurement is completed in 4 seconds, which is particularly relevant when testing several hundred measurement points across larger PV installations.
For on site use in PV installations and other high voltage systems, the IR5051-90 combines the measurement functions of the IR5051 with a compact and lightweight design. The included hard case protects the instrument against dust and water in IP65 environments. With a maximum rated voltage of 2000 V in measurement category CAT III, the instrument is designed for testing PV systems in this classification. After the measurement, the automatic discharge function dissipates residual voltage in the test object. Shielded test leads and guarding reduce interference for stable measurement results.
Insulation diagnosis outside the PV test section
In addition to PV insulation testing, the IR5051-90 can also be used for standard high voltage insulation measurements, for example on cables, motors and transformers. In such applications, insulation resistance values are useful for an initial assessment, but they are not sufficient for evaluating aging, moisture ingress, or contamination in detail. Insulation resistance also varies with temperature, humidity, and the time dependent behavior of the insulating material, so a single measurement has only limited value for condition assessment.
For these high voltage insulation measurements, the IR5051-90 provides additional diagnostic functions. Polarization Index evaluates the change in insulation resistance over time and provides information about aging, moisture, and contamination. Dielectric Absorption Ratio follows the same principle with shorter time intervals and is suited to applications in which readings stabilize more quickly. Dielectric Discharge is used to assess multilayer insulation and helps identify degradation within the insulation material. Step Voltage and Ramp tests extend this evaluation to changing test voltage and help reveal weak points that may not be visible at one fixed test voltage.
Wireless documentation included
Measurement data can be stored in the instrument and retrieved later for review, reporting, or transfer to external systems. Because the IR5051-90 includes the Z3210 as standard, measured values can also be sent wirelessly to smartphones or tablets for mobile documentation and further processing. When used together with the free GENNECT Cross app for iOS and Android, the instrument can be integrated into documentation workflows directly in the field. The Z3210 also supports HID operation, so measured values can be transmitted as keyboard input to Excel or other applications.
For computer based documentation, stored data can be transferred using the optional DT4900-01 communication package. Its optically isolated interface provides galvanic separation from the PC and also supports changing instrument settings from the computer. Measurement control is not available via DT4900-01.
The IR5051-90 is manufactured in HIOKI’s own production facilities in Japan.
